Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
